Jennifer Jones
New Design Britain finalist
Jennifer Jones, a Woven Textiles graduate from Winchester School of Art, has designed a selection of hand woven cloths. Designed and produced for the Interiors market. Each sample being a tribute, in some way to the heritage of the textile industry in one of each of the four parts of Britain that make up the British Isles, England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
She wanted the fibre, and/or design for each sample to be significant in each case, therefore;
• For England she chose cotton yarn spun in the Derbyshire Mills, the design is an abstract reflection of the half timbered Tudor houses that overseas visitors consider quintessentially English.
• For Scotland she has used Alpaca, and Mohair along with hand dyed Loop Angora. Jennifer introduced untraditional construction methods for a plaid cloth, and constructed cloth suitable for rugs and blankets, in the colours of the heather from the Mountains and Moors of Highland Scotland.
• For Wales she has used motifs from the traditional Welsh Tapestry Blankets and designed some fabrics with a more subtle representation, woven in cotton and chenille.
• For Ireland she decided to make a cloth using linen which she combined with fine wool and used ideas of colour and shape inspired by the Giants Causeway in Northern Ireland. The resulting design would make an effective upholstery fabric.
