Lynsey Henderson
New Design Britain finalist
Lynsey Henderson, a M.F.A student at Edinburgh College of Art, specializing in printed textiles, has designed a range of wallpapers which are intrinsically Scottish.
All base materials used have been sourced from local Scottish manufacturers and as the designs are all hand printed and designed by herself, a Scot, in Scotland she feels the designs are authentic.
Lynsey was inspired to create the wallpapers in this manner by the Slow Design Movements manifesto. In brief the movement, initially inspired by the famous Slow Food Movement, seeks to create items of beauty which are created in a morally, ethical and local manner in turn keeping local crafts people in work rather than sourcing abroad.
An added inspiration in creating her work in such a way has been the change in consumer behaviour. The mass produced throw away culture is having less appeal to people. There is a higher awareness of the real cost to production: the human cost, the waste and bi-products, the excessive fuel consumption in transporting goods around the world. Consumers are now appreciating the soulful, local, handcrafted, well considered purchase.
The subject matter for her drawings and subsequent designs, were inspired by the flora & fauna of Scotland.
